HR1

House Democrats are pushing a sweeping anti-corruption voting rights bill as their first of the year.

The bill has four main goals:

1. Expanding voter registration.

The bill works to modernize the registration process through expansion of Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) and online voter registration.

2. Implementing fair redistricting.

HR1 will establish clear rules around state redistricting processes so that maps can be drawn fairly and gerrymandering doesn’t decrease the value of any person’s vote. This is an important step for American democracy: ensuring voters elect their officials rather than officials choosing their voters.

3. Outlawing voter purging.

Illegal voter roll purging is a prevalent problem that wrongly strips people of their ability to vote. Under the pretense of “updating” voter rolls, many districts unfairly and illegally purge eligible voters from the list. HR1 will outlaw this undemocratic process once and for all.

4. Restoring the Voting Rights Act.

This aspect of HR1 aims to strengthen our elections by cutting back the obstructive laws that have kept voters from the ballot box for decades. HR1 includes provisions to bolster voting rights and protect all eligible voters when they go to vote.
